Penumbra founder Steven Rand credits his New York roots for shaping his musical tastes—a mix of jazz, Latin, and pop music. Rand, who has taught writing and literature for many years at the University of North Dakota, has performed throughout the Upper Midwest in colleges, coffeehouses, and other venues.
As a teenager, Ron Franz started taking guitar lessons during the folk revival of the '60s. For many years, Franz has performed solo as a folk singer-songwriter and with rock and country bands in the Grand Forks area. The newest member of Penumbra, he brings with him a wide-ranging appreciation of musical genres and a solid sense of harmony.
First playing percussion on stage at age 6, Steve Augustin began a lifelong love affair with rhythm. This self-taught musician has provided Penumbra with steady hands for many years, performing on congas and other Latin percussion instruments.
